Résumé (autre langue) : The architecture and growth dynamics of the oil palm root system are described. Following a transitional juvenile phase, eight different morphological types of roots were distinguished according to their development pattern and state of differentiation: primary vertical roots (RI VD) and primary horizontal roots (RI H), secondary horizontal roots (RII H), upward growing secondary vertical roots (RII VU) and downward growing secondary vertical roots (RII VD), superficial (sRIII) and deep ( dRIll) tertiary roots and quaternary roots (RIV) . The relative position of these types of roots represents a morphological and functional unit of the root system, called "root architectural unit" of the oil palm. By identifying the edification sequence of these different roots we were able to establish the basis for mathematical formalization of the functioning of root meristems. The mathematical models used in this work are based on stochastic processes (graphs, automata, laws of probability). The processes of growth, branching and mortality and the geometrical parameters are formalized and put together in a computer model: the reference axis. Simulation provides three-dimensional numerical mock-ups, the validation of which appears satisfactory. These models help to estimate root biomass and distribution, locate and quantify the absorbing parts of roots and assess the volume of soil explored by assimilating roots. These various applications offer a promising future for the study of carbon allocation patterns between the aerial and underground parts of plants, or an approach towards the intricate phenomenon of root competition.
