Abstract : Chestnut wood assortments are needed on the wood market for several applications (from agricultural poles to furniture assortments), but the mean low - grade of the Italian coppice production can't completely satisfy this need. Peeling and assembling of the veneers thereof could allow also the use of low - grade stems to produce a rather sophisticated material (LVL) with high performance levels. About 500 bolts (1,5 in long, 20 cm lowest diameter, 50 M3) cross cut from Chestnut stems, chosen in 4 French and Italian stands, were measured, steamed at low temperature to avoid HTR damage and peeled with purpose designed cutting parameters in order to have a satisfying ratio surface - quality / cost of the final product (LVL for window frames and furniture). During the manufacturing operations, defects, damages and other problems were noted together with the sizes of various rejected bolts. Chestnut wood rotary cutting is possible in any peeling plant; the green veneer yield being about 35%, with significant differences depending on the provenance; the defects most affecting yield being those connected to the shape (while cross-cutting and rounding-off) and ring shake (on the mean core diameter and while trimming) whereas the heart checks effects have been reduced by means of a suitable The solution of some of the problems arisen (bolts quality, steaming operations, bolt length, veneer joining) together with improvements in peeling technology could ensure in the future better results.
