Titre anglais : Prospections of the Palmae. A necessity for the improvement of oil-yielding palms

Résumé (autre langue) : Explorations in the Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Cameroon for E. guineensis, and in Latin America for E. melanococca give hope of new progress in oil palm improvement. Nevertheless, this work is insufficient: the Elaeis in the Congo, Zaïre and Angola should also be studied. The same applies to the coconut: the prospection of its centres of dispersal, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, seems indispensable. Finally, the inventory .and study of the Palmae of Amazonia could provide new orientations in the field of oil-yielding palms. Prospection puts considerable means to work at all stages: preprospection, prospection and exploitation which, in addition to the creation of collections, lead to the immediate introduction of the material discovered in to the current programmes. An organization like the F. A. O. can play an important part in getting over the difficulties which can arise al the level of international contacts, consignments of planting material or phytosanitary controls.
