Résumé : The problem of rice fields weed infestation with red rice forms is urgent for many rice growing countries. Red rice is pronounced one of the main weeds in Europe. Today up to 70% rice fields are infested with red rice in Italy, Spain, Greece and France (Ferrero, 1995). In rice fields of Russian Federation red rice is spread everywhere reaching at some plots 20 ¿ 25%. Rice breeders are attracted by extremely high viability of red rice, its low demand for soil and climatic conditions and competitive ability. A number of red rice varieties have been released in some countries, their kernels being used for cooking exotic dishes. Russian breeders also have started research of red rice forms in order to use them in breeding programs. In 1996 ¿ 1997 rice plants with unshedding red color grains were selected from rice varieties grown in Kuban area. Three-year evaluation program for 23 samples showed possibility to use red rice forms in breeding. These forms are not inferior to traditional white rice forms in many morphological and biological traits and exceed them in some traits. These forms can be used as initial material in breeding and the best samples can originate new red rice varieties.
