Abstract : The European Commission's rural development policies offer more and more tools for integrated, multi-sectoral development. One of the most concrete applications of these policies are the food and wine routes and wine routes. The wine routes provide a form of tourist promotion which is able to create "virtuous circles" which not only valorise the culinary delights of the rural areas but manage to integrate all the players in the same food processing supply chain. The doubt may arise as to whether these tools are really effective in generating returns for the whole territory and the local production realities in terms of economics and image. The question is whether these routes are able or not to generate economies of scale and economies of system which can improve the local supply chains and at the same time improve the conditions within the rural territory they originate in. The aim of this study is therefore to understand whether tools such as the wine route, offering an opportunity for the producers of typical products, can be effective in re-activating and safeguarding rural areas.
