Résumé : The purpose of this mission was to examine the achievements of the Yadana Project socioeconomic programme in terms of perennial tree crops. During the visit, particular attention was paid to the first introduction of cocoa trees in this region. A tour of the main work completed in the field showed that the efforts made are focusing on improving the health conditions, medical care and schooling of populations in the gas pipeline zone, on developing roads and transport, but also on animal production, tree crops and food crops. For the agricultural aspects, the number of farmers involved in this programme reached 1 249 in 2003. The agricultural projects have been designed with the fanners themselves, through village committees. The assistance provided by Total in this field is concentrating on providing improved plant varieties, fertilizers or phytosanitary products, technical advice and the provision of micro-credit. The agricultural projects being implemented mainly involve rice and tree crops - rubber, cashew, fruit trees and oil palm. The first cocoa trees were introduced into this region in July 2003, following collaboration with the Monbana company, which intends developing the cocoa trade in Burma. Following this mission, it is possible to put forward proposals intended to improve the impact of innovations, particularly for marketing and commodity chain organization. Advice is given for improving cocoa crop management sequences, and a programme of action for the coming year is presented: technical training for agronomists and farmers, planting of 30 hectares of cocoa trees under coconut or betel palm shade, and preparation for 2005 of plots under tree legume or coconut shade. A programme of missions by experts in tree crop agronomy and socio-economics is proposed.
