Résumé : Extracts of Mucuna pruriens were examined as anti-feedants to 7±1 days old adult Desert Locust. Locusts were offered discs of cabbage leaves of known weight under no choice condition. Discs were dipped in Mucuna extracts for 1min, dried and offered to the insects. Five starved locusts were allowed to feed for three hours before the discs were weighed again. Then locusts were left without food for 24h, then their fecal pellets were collected, over dried and weighed. Another set of experiments was designed to investigate the feeding deterrence of Mucuna extracts when given a choice. A cabbage leaf was cut in the form of a round disc and divided into two identical halves weighed separately. One half was dipped for I min in the Mucuna extracts and the other was dipped in the solvent to serve as control. The two halves were reassembled in the form of a circle and put in a cage. Five adult locusts were introduced and allowed to feed for 3h. After feeding, the remaining parts of each half were weighed again. Percent loss in weight for treated and control was calculated for the no-choice and the choice bioassay tests. Difference in weight of the frass was calculated for the case of no-choice bioassay only. The data was analyzed using Mstat-c software package (t-test). Results showed significant differences between treated and control in both cases which gives strong evidence that Mucuna extracts may have an anti-feedants property against the Desert Locust.
