Résumé : In 2004, preliminary experiments have been initiated in CIRAD Réunion on the influence of the parapheromone methyleugenol (ME) on mating success of males of the Peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata. This study aimed at determining if males exposed to ME show an increased mating success, compared with untreated males, as has been demonstrated for instance in Bactrocera dorsalis in previous research conducted by USDA Hawaii. Preliminary tests were conducted in order to precise the methodology. For the first set of experiments, cohorts of 25 males were provided 100µl methyleugenol (ME) during a period of two hours. In a first study on the persistence of ME effect, ME treated males showed a better mating success than untreated males, when tested the day of the treatment or two days later. One week after the treatment, this effect became unclear. In a second study, the effect of repeated exposure of males to ME was examined. When males were submitted to two or four exposures on different days, treated males showed less mating success than untreated ones, indicating an adverse effect of repeated exposures to ME. Current studies examine the influence of reduced volumes of ME on male cohorts. When using volumes of 100, 50 or 20 µl, males show an increased mating success but toxic side-effects are observed. Interestingly, the use of volumes as low as 0,5 or 0,2 µl appears sufficient to demonstrate an effect on B. zonata male mating success. (Texte intégral)
