Abstract : The primary architecture of plants is derived from the shoot apical meristem (SAM). As new information emerges regarding the genetic regulation of meristem organisation and function, the opportunity now exists to explore the relationship between gene expression in the SAM during development and the evolution of plant form. Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a tropical monocotyledon perennial plant from the Arecaceae family. Oil palm is an unbranched plant with only one SAM. Leaves are organised in rims with inflorescences originating in their axils. Oil palm has a conical shoot apex which is buried in a depression in the crown of the palm within a soft mass of young leaves and leaf bases. In order to describe the functional organisation of the oil palm SAM and to compare expression patterns with other species, a characterisation of homologues of key regulatory genes was undertaken. Nine oil palm cDNAs related to the Arabidopsis thaliana genes STM, CUC, CLVI and WUS have been isolated. Their transcript accumulation is being investigated using RT-PCR and in situ hybridisation. This will enable us to study the relationship between the cellular organisation of the oil palm shoot apical meristem and the gene expression patterns characterised.
