Résumé : In French-speaking Africa, chemical control is used to protect more than a million hectares of cotton crops. Under the stress of the worsening economic situation, cotton growers are using excessively low pesticide dosages on their cotton crops, even though they are fully aware of the importance of pest control. New costeffective and en v iro nmen t-frien d ly crop protection programmes involving lower chemical pesticide dosages have been proposed. These programmes are based on a better understanding of cotton pests to assess infestation levels, match them against treatment thresholds, and choose pesticide formulations, dosages and spraying conditions. It is essential to train development agents and farm managers to make these techniques operational and improve toxic vigilance in handling the chemicals and packaging after use.
