Résumé : The whole Vietnamese aquatic production is 1.88 millions tons, twice higher than ten years ago. The production issued from aquaculture (680,000 tons) consists mainly of freshwater fishes due to the wide area of freshwater bodies. Several fish species are cultured. They have different and complementary characteristics related to the feeding regime and to the water quality requirement. Fishes are produced in monoculture or polyculture usually in intensive or extensive conditions, respectively. Evolution of these systems is illustrated here through two fish productions carried out in South of Viet Nam. The first example concerns the production of pangasiid catfishes in the Mekong delta. The "pangasiculture" started in the sixties and it has increased tremendously from 1994 (30,000 tons) to now {at least 140,000 tons in 2002).This fast rise is the result of combiningfish potential, traditionnal savoirfaire in fish culture, recent scientific advances, local availability of feed and demand on the international fish market. Foreseen evolutions will mostly depend on the management of the production systems already highly intensified. For that, the coordination of all the actors involved is required. The second example concerns the peri-urban aquaculture in the suburbs of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).About 34ootons offish are produced per year in 820 ha of ponds. This production is limited regarding to the fish consumption in HCMC. However, this production plays an important role in the sewage treatment and recycling of various wastes and byproducts. Various fish production systems are present in the periurban aquaculture: monoculture and polyculture of several species, nursery of tilapia, ornemental fish production. Fish farmers have to move progressively to the periphery, driven away by the expansion of the industry and the urban area and the rise of the water pollution.
