Résumé : Good planting material is an essential feature of sustainable cocoa cultivation. However, the potential of the cocoa genetic resources is still largely under-utilised. Only about 30% of the cocoa acreage is planted with selected varieties that show improved yield capacity. Most planting material is highly susceptible to diseases and pests though significant variation for resistance has been found in collections and breeding trials. Cocoa selection activities have suffered from the long period of low cocoa prices and some programmes were even discontinued. Past international collaboration has played an important role in breeding and selection of new cocoa varieties. The CFC/ICCO/IPGRI project is currently reinforcing certain activities but more support will be required to ensure effective utilisation of cocoa genetic resources. Regional selection programmes would be possible in the light of the similarity in production constraints within America, Africa and Asia. Interaction between different disciplines and with farmers is fundamental for obtaining results adapted to the needs of the producers and consumers. The following aspects will be dealt with in this paper: 1. present status of available planting materials, 2. trends in cocoa breeding, 3. ongoing international collaboration, and 4. some priorities or opportunities for new collaborative initiatives.
