Titre anglais : Mechanics of standing trees: The evaluation of gravitational forces on a tree trunk from the usual tree measurements

Résumé (autre langue) : A standing tree stem is submitted to gravity, eg bending forces on a non-equilibrated tree. To qualify gravitational effects, one must evaluate not only the tree mass, but also the "lever arm", and therefore the position of the centre of gravity in a horizontal plane, which cannot be measured in a felled tree. From a simple schematization of the tree (a right tilted stem, and a crown, fig 1), a method of estimating these co-ordinates from a few measurements in the standing tree is proposed, using the slope of the stem at breast height and 8 radii of the crown (to evaluate the magnitude and direction of its eocentricity, (fig 2). First, we applied the method to 9 poplars, and classified them into three groups: right and vertical trees, tilted trees, and twisted ones (table I). We then used this method to estimate bending moments acting on the standing trees, and compared this estimate with the experimental results of a mechanical test: the felling of the support-ed mass (fig 3). Measurements and modelling show that the effect of bending forces is always more obvious than that of compressive ones, even in apparently equilibrated trees. The schematization is adequate for the first two groups: right and vertical trees and tilted ones (fig 5, trees 1-7), and the es-timation of crown parameters is of greater importance than the stem slope. In order to describe twist-ed trees (trees 8 and 9), one must make further measurements.
