Résumé : The connectedness in Arctic regions between migratory waterbird populations originating from different continents and the potential for virus exchange at their shared Arctic breeding ground point to the need to explore the largely unstudied circumpolar circulation of avian influenza viruses (AIV). We here report the investigation of AIV in wild birds and lakes in a high Arctic area of Northeast Greenland. No AIV could be detected in the fecal, feather, and water samples collected from large flocks of pink-footed geese Anser brachyrhynchus and barnacle geese Branta leucopsis in and around refuge lakes, where they congregate at high density during their flightless molting period in summer.

Résumé (autre langue) : La conectividad dentro de las regiones árticas entre las poblaciones de aves acuáticas migratorias procedentes de diferentes continentes y el potencial de intercambio de virus en las zonas de reproducción comunes, señalan la necesidad de explorar la circulación circumpolar de los virus de la influenza aviar (AIV), en gran medida no estudiada. En este estudio se reporta un estudio sobre el virus de influenza aviar en aves silvestres y en lagos en una zona del Ártico Alto en el noreste de Groenlandia. No se pudo detectar al virus de influenza en las muestras de heces, plumas y agua recolectadas de grandes parvadas de ánsares de pico corto Anser brachyrhynchus y barnacla cariblanca Branta leucopsis y alrededor de lagos que sirven como refugio, donde se congregan en altas densidades durante sel período de muda con disminución en la capacidad de vuelo durante el verano.
