Abstract : The genus Capulavirus is a new genus in the family Geminiviridae that contains four species (Alfalfa leaf curl virus, Euphorbia caput-medusae latent virus, French bean severe leaf curl virus and Plantago lanceolata latent virus) that infect both cultivated and non-cultivated plants [1]. Alfalfa leaf curl virus (ALCV) and Plantago lanceolata latent virus (PlLV) that infect alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and Plantago lanceolata, respectively, are both transmitted by widespread aphid species [2,3]. Plantago lanceolata and alfalfa plant samples were worldwide collected and tested for the presence of PlLV and ALCV, respectively. We reveal that ALCV is present in 10 countries (Argentina, France, Greece, Iran, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Spain, Syria and Tunisia) but is apparently absent from Namibia and South Africa. In addition, we show that, of all the analysed locations, ALCV likely emerged and diversified in the Middle East before spreading further westward to the western Mediterranean basin and Argentina [4]. While PlLV was initially reported from the Åland Islands South-West Finland, we show that PlLV is found in diverse geographical and climatic zones of the Old World, including temperate oceanic (Quiberon/France and Carnota/Spain) or hot semi-desert (Kerman/Iran). These results suggest that, like ALCV, the geographic distribution of PlLV is larger than initially thought.
