Résumé : Cotton production in South-East Asia is facing severe and persistent pest infestation together with particular climatic conditions (humid, sub-humid tropics) and socio-economic constraints. These scenario differ considerably from those countries where advanced cotton research has been developed (USA, Australia, Africa and India). Perhaps more than anywhere else, the strengthening of research is essential for cotton development in the region. It will mostly rely on the ability of cotton-growing countries to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of cotton-based cropping systems as well as the quality of local cotton regarding the market standards. Networking between the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) of cotton producing countries is a key issue for addressing such challenges. It is an efficient way to optimize resources allocated for cotton research and development and to maximize its outputs in each country. Since 1993, the "Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronornique pour le Dévelopement" (CIRAD) and Kasetsart University, Thailand (KU) have joined efforts to develop cotton research and training at a regional level as part of the Development Oriented Research on Agrarian Research (DORAS) Project. This regional cooperation has been supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France. It has involved cotton researchers from Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar. The Project anticipates to strengthen regional cooperation and to establish a formal regional network for cotton research and development in South-East Asia. The Regional Conference and Workshop on Cotton Research and Development in South-East Asia and the 3rd National Cotton Conference, organized by Kasetsart University Research and Development Institute (KURDI) and the CIRAD, will be held from 27-29 October 1997 in Chiang Rai, Thailand. The purposes of the conference are to exchange knowledge, policies, and research output regarding cotton as well as to lay the foundations of a South-East Asia network for cotton research and development
