Résumé : Ecopathology is a recent method to study animal diseases, the outcomes of breeding. It began industrialized countries, in order to bring convenient solutions from an economic point of view, to multifactorial health constraints in intensive production systems. It is now being introduced in lesser developed tropical countries, with extensive or semi-intensive production systems. In spite of national or intemational campaigns against infectious or parasitic diseases, breeders and veterinarians still have to deal with the everyday health problems of' abortions, post natal mortality and respiratory diseases. Several surveys were perfonued among settled herds in Brazil (goat abortions), Zimbabwe (kid mortality), Chad and Senegal (sheep and goat pneumophaties). Data analysis enabled health constraints to be ranked and was able to assist in explaining the reasons for the problems in different situations. Adequate solutions were then proposed to development programs. This methodology is of major interest to these countries. Nevertheless, it needs improvements is to allow surveys of transhumant herds to be undertaken which still are the main breeding systems in pastoral areas in sub-Saharan Africa.
