1999. Temperate rice varieties with wide F1 hybrid compatibility and incompatibility.
In : Temperate Rice Conference. 2
Résumé : We observed a particular behaviour of temperate varieties grown under mediterranean France conditions in term of F1 hybrid compatibility. When used as parent in crosses, Estrela. a Porlugal extra-long grain japonica-indica vairiety, gives hybrids with good fertility whatever die genetic nature (japonica, indica or japonica-indica) of the other parent. In spite of its wide compatibility. Estrela did not give any interesting progenies when crossed with indica varieties of our working collection: the beneficial role of wide compatibility in improving the outcome of japonica x indica crosses is questionable. Based on FI ferlility the on in variety which does not combine well with Estrela is Carinam, a extra-long grain japonica variety derived through anther culture from the Flof a japonica x japonica cross. The evaluation of the fertility in crosses of Carinam shows that this variety induces a sterility. of the F1 hybrid whatever the genetic nature (japonica, indica, japonica-indica or Abasmati@) of the other parent. This wide incompatibility can be partially explained by the intervention of a single major gene. As the spikelet sterility is gradually disappearing during the first generations of inbreeding the wide F1 incompatibility of Carinam does not hamper its interest as a genitor.
