Résumé : This paper explores the methodology of on-farm research. The method is based on a rational choice of specific situations. It concentrates on the farm as a place where decisions on agricultural production are taken. The author holds these decisions are a result of the dialectic relationship between economic and social systems and ecosystems and a given historical context. Topics covered include selection of investigation locations, village-level studies, the residential unit as a unit of investigation, identification and analysis of the farm, the cultivated plot as an observational unit, study of livestock raising, method for analyzing observations, interdisciplinary work, and the integration of analysis and action.
