Résumé : In 1995, the IER-CIRAD "Projet bas-fonds" (InIand Valley Project) conducted some hydrological research activities. The Kobani watershed, in the Sikasso region, was monitored in detail, with limnigraphs, rainfall gauges, and piezometers. The first results of this study give information on the hydrology of the watershed through the year, but do not allow the modelling of water flows. 1995 was characterized by a very low rainfall, and therefore low water discharge in the valley bottom. In theses conditions, evaluating the low cost water management system constructed in 1994 was interesting to know its ability to work in much dryer conditions than in 1994. The water management system allowed the management of a minimum height of surface water, or at least keeps the groundwater table close to the surface. Nevertheless, the quick recession did not allow a significant improvement of the hydrological conditions for off-season crops (mainly market gardening). For rice, it was clear that the water management system has a positive effect on yields, even during years with low rainfall. But the effect is much more limited than during rainy years. This work will be continued in 1996.
