Résumé : Sterile plants of the rice gene pool GPIRAT-10, comprising cold-tolerant japonica varieties and lines originally developed in France, Italy, USA, and Chile, were manually crossed with genotypes developed by the Rice Breeding Program of the Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA), Chile. Population PQUI-1 was developed from GPIRAT-10 (50%), Brillante-INIA (16.22%), Buli-INIA (13.3%), Diamante-INIA (10.3%), CINIA 606 (5.09%), and CINIA 609 (5.09%). Population PQUI-1, characteristically early maturing and cold tolerant, was planted in two ecosystems (Colchagua, 34°38'S and 71°24'W; and Chillan 36°34'S and 72°02'W). Male-sterile plants were selected on the basis of climatic adaptation and other agronomic traits of interest to the Rice Program. As a result, two new populations were developed: PQUI-1/CO/O/ 1 and PQUI-1/CH/0/1. Fertile S. plants were also selected for developing fixed lines. These populations were subjected to two recombination cycles, and population improvement by recurrent selection was initiated to develop cold-tolerant germplasm with the grain quality required by the domestic market.
