2000. Influence of physical environment and farming practices on quality variability of corsican clementine.

Résumé : The critical situation presently facing Corsican Clementine mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco.) led the partners in this sub sector to choose fruit quality as the best way Io improve returns with a low volume crop. To identify the research requirements of the sub sector, variability was assessed al different stages of quality management, from the tree to the final consignee. This study addresses quality management al both plot and farm levels. The objective was to identify the main factors responsible for variations in fruit quality among different orchards. Observations made on 100 plots located on 75 farms showed that Corsican Clementines are characterized by wide variability in all quality parameters investigated: sugar, acidity, percent juice, and fruit weight. This variability is due to the combined effect of several factors mainly connected with farming practices and exposure to light. Soil and rootstock characteristics do not appear to be determining factors in quality variability. Their expression is masked, probably due to the greater influence of unwise farming practices. The structure of the farm has an influence on orchard management and consequently an indirect effect on quality. By identitying the quality parameters and the production techniques which require improvement, this study has contributed Io creating a research program based on the control of the agronomic components of fruit quality in citrus.
