Résumé : Lethal yellowing of the coconut palm was detected for the first time in Honduras by the PCR technique in 1996 (Ashburner et al 1996). The disease, with a symptomatology identical to that found in the Caribbean and Mexico, seems to have appeared more or less at the same time on the island of Roatan (Islas de la Bahia) and in the Trujillo region, Atlantida Department, on the Atlantic coast. Since then, the disease has spread both eastwards and westwards along the coast, devastating a large proportion of the Honduran Atlantic Tall palms (HAT) (Alto criolo or Alto Atlantico). Hybrid coconut palms (mostly Malayan Dwarf x Pacific Tall or Rennell Tall type crosses) from Jamaica or Costa Rica were planted very soon after LY was diagnosed in that region, due to the acknowledged tolerance of the MAYPAN hybrid (Malayan Yellow Dwarf x Panama Tall) to LY in Jamaica. However, in 1999, numerous cases of various yellowing-decay disorders appeared on those hybrids, sometimes casting doubt on their performance with respect to LY, though nobody carried out a true etiological study of those cases of decay. The aim of the mission was therefore to evaluate the spread of LY along the Atlantic coast of Honduras and the problems affecting these hybrids.
