Résumé : This article describes the investment behaviour of wine producers in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, as a result of pollution control legislation. It is based on an in-depth study of the sector, conducted in close collaboration with the Rhône-Méditerranée-Corse Water Board. The analysis called upon three different but complementary theoretical approaches. Firstly, we considered the neo-classic framework, in which producer/polluters are rational and informed. Secondly, we applied the neo-institutional approach in order to highlight transaction costs and institutions. Finally, the evolutionary approach allowed us to illustrate the problem of technological dynamics, innovation, and company decisions.
