Résumé : Since the 1980s, many countries have become aware that, since agricultural producers are the beneficiaries of technology, they must be more effectively involved in generating and disseminating it. Research and extension institutions have changed the way they approach and link up with producers, and the institutions themselves have changed under pressure from increasingly well-organized producers. In some instances, the producers have organized themselves to fill the void left by ineffectual research and extension institutions. Financing mechanisms have also changed as a result of steps taken by stakeholders, mainly donors, but also by governments and organized producers. The circumstances conducive to such change and are discussed, as is the extent to which effective partnerships can survive in times of change.
