Résumé : Rice production in Europe and other temperate areas needs progress in genetics and breeding, agronomy, adaptation of quality to markets, competitiveness. An international symposium entitled "Eurorice 2001" on the theme of the management and use of genetic resources for rice growing in Mediterranean and other temperate zones was held at Krasnodar (Russia) from 3 to 8 September 2001 at the initiative of French partners -CIRAD (Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement) and IRD (Institut de recherche pour le développement) and Russian partners - VNIIRISA (All Russia Rice Research Institute), KSAU (Kuban State Agricultural University) and Krasnodar Territory. The symposium was attended by 174 delegates representing 22 countries. After presentation of more than 70 communications and posters and subsequent discussion, the participants selected themes and priority actions to be undertaken in varietal improvement in order to maintain and develop the competitiveness of rice growing in European and other temperate zones in a context of rapid growth of domestic markets and of competition from tropical and subtropical regions. The symposium will strengthen the scientific relationship between all the partners from Western and Eastern Europe involved in rice breeding and production and promote standard methodologies and tools for the characterization of rice germplasm in Europe as developed by the recent European project on rice genetic resources. Eurorice 2001 will also contribute to assessing and using the rice genetic resources for the benefit of Europe and temperate Mediterranean areas in terms of health, sustainable rice cropping systems and preservation of the rice production area. Regarding these goals, participants will debate current issues and identify key research programmes for the future.
