Résumé : During this mission, all the estates were visited between 12 and 27 June. Only two estates in Aceh, Seunagan and Seumanyan, could not be visited again this time. The very good production trends in 2000 were confirmed in 2001, in terms of CPO, with a new record for Socfindo as a whole: - 165,785 t CPO as opposed to 156,608 t in 2000 and 153,706 in 1993, - i.e. 5.563 t CPO/ha with very good results at Aek Loba (6.011), Seumanyam (5.901) and exceptional results at Sungei Liput (6.052). There are many reasons for these good results: - good rainfall in general in recent years and a low to zero water deficit, - drastic reductions in bunch thefts in some estates, protective trenches, surveillance teams, etc. - increase in N, K and Mg fertilization and systematic application of the fixed minimum maintenance rate, - assisted pollination is effectively operational again wherever necessary, - better care taken of immature plantings (fertilization, Oryctes control with Marshal, upkeep). A tour of the estates generally showed that management is good, the palms are very green in the vast majority of cases, though some aspects need to be improved locally: - management of individual B deficiencies (critical age, 3 years) requires greater initiative and organization on the part of the person in charge locally: appropriate recommendations were made, - correction of remaining patches of magnesium yellowing, though fewer and less extensive than a few years ago (same at Lae Butar, Div. IV), - management of replacement palms after deaths due to Ganoderma (MP, BB, TG especially) or flooding (SL, SG, NL,...) must be rationalized, in order for this operation to be truly worthwhile and not a waste of time and money, - recommendations are also given for the decisions to be taken whether or not to postpone fertilizer applications if climatic conditions are not ideal, - a general effort needs to be made to ensure better supervision of fertilizer applications, so that their location and dispersion is as near as possible to instructions, - ensure better monitoring in the floodable zones of SL so as to check, with full knowledge of the facts, whether it is really worth planting and normally exploiting those zones in the coming years. Fertilizer schedule No. 18, which was used for the 2002 fertilization programme, should be kept in 2003, unless unforeseen events show up in the LA results, for which samples will be taken in July / August and analysed in September / October. Given the drought in some estates (1st half of 2002), the 2002 LA will be used to cheek whether some blocks warrant additional nitrogen fertilizer, to be applied immediately (October / November). This drought will no doubt have repercussions for yields in 2003 and, to a lesser degree, in 2004. The block numbering in some estates has been radically changed, which will not facilitate the recording of nutrition and fertilization data trends. It is requested that the Agriculture Department send a computer file indicating the precise correspondence between the old and new numbering, along with any useful explanations (merging of planting years in the same block, disappearance of certain LA samples, etc.) at the same time as LA samples are sent for analysis (or better still before). The main results of the experimental agronomy network are given in this document. Production data recording with the PREDEC system for all the ongoing trials has been generalized for the 2001 production data.
