Résumé : Major advances have been made in increasing rice production worldwide as a result of large scale adoption of modern high yielding varieties of indica rice and introduction of improved cultural practices. World rice production increasing from 257 million tons in 1966 to 596 million tons in 1999. The present world population of 6.1 billion is likely reach 8.0 billion by 2025. More than 70% of this increase will occur in Asia where rice is staple food. It is estimated that we will have to produce 50% more rice to satisfy the growing demand for food. This increased demand will have to be met from less land, with less water, less labor and less chemicals. Thus the challenges to rice improvement are to develop varieties with higher potential, more durable resistance to diseases and insects and higher level of tolerance to abiotic stresses. We are employing several approaches for increasing the yield potential such as population improvement, ideotype breeding, heterosis breeding, wide hybridisation, genetic engineering and molecular breeding. Conventional breeding, wide hybridisation and genetic engineering are being employed for incorporating durable resistance to diseases and insects and tolerance to abiotic stresses.
