Résumé : Population breeding has been a strategy used by Embrapa Rice and Beans since 1984, when it started in Brazil. Cold stress is one of the major problems for rice cropping in the South. Due to its complexity conventional breeding did not produce strong positive results, thus we decided to invest in population breeding. We started using population CNA 1 as source of male sterility to synthesize a broad genetic background population, caring genes for male sterility, earliness, high yield potential, grain quality, resistance to blast disease and iron toxicity, and cold tolerance. Twelve progenitors were chosen and crossed to it to produce the new population (CNA 11/0/0), after three cycles of intermating. The S0 plants were grown in two locations were the climatic data that indicated high frequency of cold weather during rice flowering. Mass selection was practiced; in the off-season 1999 the selected plants were recombined (CNA 11/1/1). The cycle was repeated in the following year to produce CNA 11/2/1. S0:2 families evaluation for cold tolerance will begin in 2001/02. From the segregation present in each new population S0 plants were selected and advanced to generate fixed lines. Currently there are 400 lines under evaluation in the conventional breeding program.
