Résumé : In Southern Europe, rice is usually infested by various stem borers, which damage stems and panicles. Damage has increased considerably in recent years and varies greatly depending on insect population and rice cultivar. The objective of this study was to determine plant traits affecting rice infestation by the pink stem borer (Sesamia nonagrioides). A total of 338 rice lines was evaluated in the field under natural infestation conditions during 1996, 1997 and 1998. The comparison among years was based on seven rice cultivars (Baldo 363, Koral, Ariete, Loto, Senia, Thaibonnet, Cigalon) that were common in the experimentation of all years and were used as control. A randomized complete block design with two replications was used for the evaluation. The infestation of the plants by the pink stem borer was greater in late-maturing compared to the early-maturing lines and in the taller compared to the shorter lines. Another factor affecting the susceptibility of the lines to the pink stem borer was stem thickness. The infestation percentage was significantly and positively correlated with the stem diameter in all years. Plant traits that were found to offer rice resistance could be important selection criteria when breeding was conducted for resistance to this stem borer. The ratio of plants with stem damages to those with panicle damages was less than 3 in the majority of lines, indicating that every panicle with visible damage symptoms corresponds to three infested stems.
