Résumé : In the mountains of northern Vietnam, because of increasing population and cattle pressure, the traditional slash-and-burn systems are no longer sustainable. Their main limitations were identified as: very poor water use efficiency, rapid soil degradation and high weed pressure. Since 1999, VASI and CIRAD conduct apply research to adapt direct sowing techniques to local conditions, with promising preliminary results. In upland rice fields usually abandoned by farmers, several low input systems produce 1.5 to 2 t/ha, i.e. more than yield achieved immediately after forest reclamation with traditional techniques. Crops are sown directly in a dead mulch, after soil structure and fertility have been improved by plants with strong root systems and high biomass production or through slow soil cooking (ecobuage). Weeding time is dramatically reduced as most weeds are controlled by the mulch. Alternatives to slash-and-burn already can be proposed to farmers in critical situations.
