Résumé : In Cameroon, bananas and plantains are major staple food for a large proportion of the population. A total of 1.7 million tonnes are produced annually. These crops are threatened by a wide range of pests and diseases among which the banana borer weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) is the major insect pert. Activities have been carded out in Cameroon over the past ten years on the following aspects: distribution and population dynamics and development of suitable control measures. Results indicate that significant information have been gathered on the distribution and population dynamics of the weevil. Progress have been made to broaden the spectrum of insecticides especially for commercial growers. Several insecticides from different chemical groups are now available and can therefore be used in rotation to avoid the development of resistance to C. sordidus. Results on the use of botanicals and biological control agents have shown that there is a great potential with the use of neem (Azadirachta indica) and the entomopathogenic fungus B. bassiana for weevil control. Sources of resistance to the weevil have been identified and breeding Programmes can now use them to develop genotypes with resistance to the insect. Research on other non chemical control methods such as cultural control and the use of pheromones are ongoing. (Texte intégral)
