Résumé : This mission, undertaken in connection with the replanting component of the CSDP, was intended to assess intercropping with immature coconut palms, as part of the project's applied research component, and study the cultural practices of farmers involved in the CSDP during the coconut immature phase. This mission was used to gather data from the experimental sites at Eduma, Princess Town and Nyamebekyere for the 2002 season. A visit to two other experimental sites in Central Region (Anlo and Ankwanda) was used to measure constraints linked to Oryctes. The new coconut-citrus intercropping trial sites were visited and the protocols were discussed with the OPRI agronomist. A protocol for a coconut-rubber intercropping trial was discussed and proposed in consultation with GREL agronomists. Another proposal is made to test alternative methods that complement measures currently taken against Oryctes, bringing into play innovative farming systems in which the vegetative environment around the coconut palms is arranged in such a way that it may modify pest dynamics. In terms of farmer practices, the mission provided an opportunity to test and adapt the questionnaire designed to identify, describe and understand overall farm functioning and assess farmer practices in terms of the way they manage their immature coconut plantings. The test was carried out on two farms taking part in the CSDP. There are plans to use this questionnaire and analyse the results for a sample of around thirty farms that joined the project between 2000 and 2002, which are regularly monitored and for which agronomic data are available.
