2002. Assessment of the pesticide farmer practices in peri-urban areas.

Résumé : 100 farmers at two locations in Hanoi and Ha Tay province were interviewed directly on the problems of pests and diseases attacking the main crops in hot-wet and dry-cool season aa well as pesticide practices in 2001-2002. The objectives of the study were 1, to understand and quantify farmer pesticide practices; and 2, to quantify. impact of the farmer practices on vegetable products. The result shows that farmer in these locations have long experiences of vegetable cultivation. However, they still use overdose of pesticides with sometimes forbidden one. Farmer needs to be trained on insects and diseases diagnosis. Pesticide use also needs to be guided by cooperatives and extension services, including pesticide providing, and the control vegetable production techniques and quality. Farmer concerns on protecting human health and environment. They are willing to produce safe vegetables for better quality of life. Laboratories of pesticide residue analysis need to be improved in some institutions. It is also necessary to set up a management system by Government that will encourage farmer to produce high quality vegetables.
