Résumé : This paper reports the preliminary results of an investigation into agrifood-based enterprise clusters in two communes in Hoai Due District of Ha Tay province, Vietnam. Dong Lieu commune specialises in root crop processing, and Cat Que in piglet production and marketing. This project has been implemented in the context of a Strategic Initiative on Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture (SIUPA) of the CGIAR, in collaboration with the Rural Agroenterprise Development Project of CIAT and Vietnam national research institutions and local government authorities in Ha Tay. The cassava and canna processing cluster in Dong Lieu is a complex system with many small household enterprises trading fresh roots, starch, and products derived from them to traditional and novel (industrial, high growth) markets. The pig production and marketing commune in Cat Que is less complex, but still concentrated and highly specialised in raising piglets from 6 kg to approximately 27 kg within 45-60 days. Both communes have developed a range of ancillary services and input supply enterprises. The diagnostic survey reported here provided information to identify developmental constraints (and possible solutions) as well as on more basic research issues relevant to other similar enterprise clusters e.g. enterprise and livelihood strategies for the peri-urban poor, the innovation process, and areas of actual and potential cooperation between different actors. The results were presented to and discussed with stakeholders in each commune. This process will continue with stakeholder lead action research and development, in a second phase soon to commence.
