Résumé : In this paper we try to conceptualise multifunctional agriculture as a process by which noncommodity goods are produced and reproduced. In turn, non commodity goods maintain or increase local (cultural and biological) diversity. Many non-commodity goods show nonprivate characters, and hence market failure occur in their provision. Non commodity goods provision result sub-optimal with regard to social needs. Processes of valorisation allow the internalisation of public non commodity goods into the commodity network and then to transform them into commodity private goods, supporting their provision. The process is analysed both at farm level and at local system level, within a theoretical framework which focuses on the continuity between the two levels.
