2003. The Breakthrough of micorfinance into small farmer lending in West Africa.
In : Current Issues in Microfinance in Africa, Johannesburg, Afrique du Sud, 12-14 August 2003
Résumé : With the collapse of many development banks and the lack of interest shown by most conventional banks in supporting the rural sector, microfinance is becoming an established financing alternative in rural areas. Despite its recent expansion and its close connections with rural life, however, microfinance provides only a partial solution to the financing needs of small-scale fanning - family agriculture - in developing countries. In what conditions can microfinance, in all its diversity, and under constraint of sustainabilty, effectively respond to the whole range of financial services required by family agriculture in a liberalised economy? This paper addresses the question in the context of West Africa. 3 It opens with a brief outline of microfinance. It then analyses the achievements and limits of rural microfinance and its contribution to financing agriculture in West Africa. The concluding section reviews the main constrains and looks at the ways in which microfinance could contribute more effectively to agriculture.
