Résumé : 1- At present the sugarcane stemborer pest, Chilo sacchariphagus (Lep: Crambidae) is absent at Açucareira de Xinavane and Maragra sugarcane estates in the southern Maputo district of Moçambique. This finding is based on results from incidental field surveys for larvae and eggs, and Chilo pheromone-baited traps to catch adults. Therefore there is no risk of incursion by this pest from these estates into the South African sugarcane industry. However there is a risk of this pest spreading to these two estates from Açucareira de Moçambique (Mafambisse) and Companhia de Sena (Marromeu, Zambezi river) in Moçambique, where it is present. 2- Several reasons have been postulated for it's absence on these estates. It may be because of the distance from the infested estates in the north, or else the recent history of these estates that have had a limited time period to become infested. Alternatively, this pest has specific temperature requirements that restrict its distribution to the relatively warmer northern sugar estates closer to the equator. 3- Insect pest numbers were extremely low at Açucareira de Xinavane and Maragra sugarcane estates. Eldana saccharina Walker (Lep: Pyralidae) and Sesamia calamistis Hamps. (Lep: Noctuidae) larvae were recovered in very low numbers. Chilo partellus (Lep: Crambidae) was identified on both estates, mainly from softer N25. However currently this insect is not a serious pest in sugarcane. C. partellus has occasionally been recovered in sugarcane in South Africa and Swaziland but it is not a problem species in this crop. Sugarcane mealybugs (Hom: Pseudococcidae), aphids (Hom: Aphididae) and Perkinsiella saccharicida Kirk (Hom: Delphacidae) were observed. The white grub species, Heteronychus licas Klug (Scarabaeoidea) are reportedly problematic on Maragra estate. 4- Additional work completed during this visit was the collection of insect material for taxonomic studies using PCR techniques, and the presentation of the FIRCOP project at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, and at the French Cooperation agency in Maputo.
