2003. Surveying the sugarcane pest Eldana saccharina (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) in a small-scale grower sector of the South African sugarcane indutry.

Résumé : In 2002 a project was initiated between SASA Experiment Station and the French organization CIRAD. The study investigated insect pests on small-scale sugar farms in relation to farming practices and other related influences. Fifty-five surveys were completed at Sezela in 12-month-old NCo 376 and N12 at Mission Section (MS), and 35 surveys in nearby commercial fields (CS). Numbers of Eldona saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were significantly lower, and the pest more restricted, at MS, compared with the CS. Similarly, lower levels of damage were detected at MS. These findings corroborate past perceptions. Furthermore, significantly less nitrogen was applied at MS (83.3 kg N ha-1) compared with CS (119 kg N ha-1), and, given the association between nitrogen and this pest, it is recommended that soil samples be taken to help maintain low infestations. The role of habitat diversity was identified. An estimated 40-50% of MS is planted to sugarcane and fields are smaller compared with CS. Other factors, such as soil type, which in turn may affect crop stress, and ratoon number, may have played a role in influencing pest numbers. It is hoped that this information will contribute towards maintaining the sugar yields of the small-scale grower, thereby ensuring that these growers continue to farm sugarcane. (Texte intégral)
