2000. Planting material improvement at SOCFINDO oil palm Estates in North Sumatra.

Résumé : SOCFINDO - a company operating in Sumatra, Indonesia since the turn of the 20th century - launched an oil palm breeding programme in the 1910s, selecting parents from the first Deli dura plantings set up in Sumatra (in Aceh) and the introductions from Congo (at Kwalak Krapoh). Three generations of mass and family selection followed each other up to 1970. In the 1950s INEAC material was introduced. These various stages led to a substantial increase in production. In 1970, close collaboration was established with IRHO to exploit SOCFINDO germplasm at Bangun Bandar and make new introductions using a reciprocal recurrent selection scheme. In addition, 16 progeny trials were set up at Aek Loba in the Aek Kwasan genetic block to test 320 different crosses corresponding to the second IRHO selection cycle. Major genetic progress was recorded at both AekKwasan and at Bangun Bandar. Progress was transferred by seed production through selfs and parental recombinations. The breeding programme is currently continuing in the Aek Loba Timur block, which was set up in 1995 with new second cycle crosses carried out at Bangun Bandar and Pobé (Benin) and clones from trials at Aek Kwasan. At Bangun Bandar, emphasis is placed on representation of parental material corresponding to the Aek Loba Timur trials and on tenera/pisifera recombinations.
