Résumé : Application in practice of IWRM at the level of small and medium-sized catchments (between 1000 and 5000 sq km) is suffering from lack of capacity, poor integrated understanding and assessment of hydrological functions and little awareness of risk factors in the short and long run. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) cannot work without a proper monitoring system. Scarce financial and human resources need to be allocated in a prioritized way to enhance the capacity of the local communities and to improve their understanding and maintenance of an appropriate monitoring frame. From three sub-basins case studies from Burkina Faso, questions and some answers about the relevance of different sources of information, at different scales in space and time have been formulated. Depending on space, numbers of actors and/or inhabitants, and required type of information and precision in the results, the question of optimization of quality information with limited budget is addressed.
