Résumé : This mission was undertaken in connection with a cooperation project funded by SCAC, comprising appraisals and technical advice for biotechnological, entomological and genetic improvement issues regarding the coconut palm, a crop subjected to the devastating damage caused by LY in Jamaica, as in neighbouring countries and in some African countries. The purpose of the mission was as follows: 1) Survey a maximum number of crop zones affected or threatened by LY, so as to inventory potential vector insects. 2) Take, site by site and species by species, as many samples as possible of those same insects for systematic determination, analysis of the molecular variability of the most suspect species, and PCR diagnosis to search for the existence of the phytoplasma associated with LY. 3) Provide advice to the partners for the entomology research to be conducted (biological aspects, experiments on the controlled transmission of LY in insect-proof cages), in order to detect vectors responsible for such transmission.
