Résumé : Rice related research at the "Centre de cooperation internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement" (Cirad) involves 3 Departments of the Institution: the Annual Crop department (Rice, sorghum, roots and tubers, sugar cane and cotton...) and 2 operational departments organized around Social sciences for rural development (Production systems, farmer's organization, public policies...) and Bio-physical sciences (genetics, plant pathology, modeling...). In the framework of the actual organization of Cirad, rice related research is involved in 13 Research Units and counts with 52 scientists. Rice scientists are working world-wide in developing countries in Africa, Madagascar, Asia and Latin America, in partnership with National & International institutions, NGOs and the private sector. Joint research units are set-up with NARES and based overseas. Also, scientists of partner institutions are hosted in France. The project portfolio in partnership focus on targeted problems for the development: delivering of new improved varieties showing yield stability and potential, and grain quality, but also adequate cropping practices. Within Cirad, rice research is based on network activities between different scientific disciplines and units in France and in targeted developing countries. The challenges for the coming years are to make better known the methodological achievements to a larger number of potential users, for example in rice synthetic population breeding, hybrids and blast resistance and to make rice research at Cirad pivotal for potential partners (NARES, others IARCs, the private sector and global initiatives like the Generation Challenge Program).
