Résumé : The purpose of this mission, which was undertaken jointly with Gérard Fourny, a coffee technologist, Fabrice Pinard, a coffee agro forestry specialist, and Denis Depommier, CIRAD Regional Director for Southern and East Africa, was to meet the coffee R&D partners in three countries (Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda) to discuss possibilities of developing CIRAD collaboration, particularly on coffee quality matters. Rwanda, which is in the phase of reconstructing its R&D institutions, is very keen for collaboration, but lacks its own skills. CIRAD could help it to strengthen its capacities and also support the quality improvement projects under way. The coffee supply chain is currently undergoing change and turning towards fully washed coffee production, requiring the adoption of new post-harvest technologies capable of significantly improving coffee quality. In that context, and given its experience acquired in the subregion, CIRAD could help Rwandan R&D to strengthen its capacities and also to support ongoing quality improvement projects". The choice of geographical location for G. Fourny's assignment will be based on exchanges to come. That choice will take into account the commitment of the partners (letters of intent, definition of a joint work programme) and the positioning of that post with the regional mandate given to it. The final decision will take into account hosting possibilities, so that the researcher will be in a good partnership situation enabling him to finalize his mission as well as possible. Much remains to be done in the coming weeks to finalize that decision and organize the researcher's departure for September: submission of the mission report and declaration of interest letters, definition of programmes of mutual interest, drafting of applications for financial support from donors, and particularly from French Cooperation, signing of an MOU or general agreement, etc.
