2003. Hot-oil treatment of chestnut timber for exterior uses.

Résumé : Chestnut timber with its high natural durability can be used for exterior applications either as round wood or sawn products. Ellagitannins which are responsible for this durability can be leached out by water, leading to both an unaesthetic appearance and a reduction in service life. Hot-oil treatment at temperatures above 100°C proved to be very efficient in solving three problems: i. Reduction in external checks for round wood as compared with normal drying, ii. Keeping a high level of durability against fungi decay after water leaching: more than 80% of the oiled specimens tested were still in the first class of durability after leaching, compared to around 50% durability class for non oil treated pieces, iii. Preventing staining from the dark brown tannin leacheate which was very visible after only two days of exposure in an ageing experiment for untreated wood, but not evident after two weeks of exposure for a sample treated with oil. Linseed oil was found to be better than rape oil, both in durability and aesthetic appearance after water leaching. (Texte intégral)
