Résumé : Alliums have always been important crops in Réunion Island. Different species presently grown are: onion and shallot (Allium cepa L.), garlic (Allium sativum L.), Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum), and leek (Allium porrum L.). Chives ()Mum schoenoprasum) and a variety of Allium ampeloprasum are sometimes found in gardens. Réunion is a small volcanic island (2 511 km2) in the Indian Ocean at 21°, located 200 km southwest of Mauritius and 700 km to the east of Madagascar. The vegetable fields rise from sea level up to 1 600 m asl mainly on andie soils. This paper presents the situation of garlic and onion production and the main research results.
