Résumé : Harvest losses caused by pests are a major constraint to cotton growing in tropical Africa (as much as 50% in some countries and y e a rs ). Treatments have been p e rfo rmed systematically until now, with spraying generally carried out at fortnightly intervals during the flowering-fruit formation phase. Treatment threshold levels are currently extended according to real outbreaks of sucking insects, epicarpal bollworms and mites; counts of endocarpal bollworms are not possible. Treatments at a young stage are also more effective. Active ingredients are chosen according to the insects present, risks of resistance and possible interactions between active ingredients. Active ingredients should be alternated and WHO recommendations concerning organophosphorus compounds and carbamates should be followed. The new protection programmes recommend low doses, spraying according to observed parasite outbreaks and very low volume spraying at 10 litres per hectare. Technicians and farmers must be trained in these techniques to ensure a smooth transition between traditional practices and threshold treatments.
