Résumé : Reunion Island, situated in the Indian Ocean, presents a unique case study to model regional bio-economic parameters of the dairy industry. It is a good example of a closed system for several parameters of the model such as movement of animals and Jabour, consumption, available land among others. Existence of several agro-ecological zones from tropical to temperate climatic conditions, different terrain conditions, vegetation types presents another unique opportunity to study the impact of these features on the dairy industry. The present study models the dairy sector at a regional (island) level, in close collaboration with key stakeholders, to study the impact of changing agricultural policies in terms of changes of subsidy norms, price fluctuations and environmental considerations with reference to N on the environmental sustainability of the dairy sector. The model can be used to generate a number of what if? scenarios, such as; what if milk production is to reach 40million litres per year, what if the stocking rate per hectare is fixed according to EU norms, what if the milk price is reduced/increased, what if the milk subsidy is reduced/increased, what if the subsidy regime changes for milk support price, pastures and other activities, what if the labour hours are reduced. With reference to the environmental component of sustainability, the model dynamically calculates Nitrogen use per ha both from mineral fertiliser and manure within the dairy farms and explores the Nitrogen management options. The model innovatively integrates linear and non-linear programming approaches to achieve the objectives.
