Résumé : For GOPDC, 1989 will be marked by record production, which should approach, if not exceed, 34,000 tonnes of bunches, as against 25,000 t in 1988 and 19,000 t in 1987, with a mean mill extraction rate of 23.9 %. If external supplies are taken into account, the mill will process almost 40,000 tonnes of bunches in 1989, corresponding to 9,500 tonnes of oil. These very good results are due to: climatic factors, low water deficit in 1986, 87 and 88, but 89 promises to be less favourable, 417 mm to date; the phytosanitary condition of the trees; the Coelaenomenodera attack (2nd half 1986) has been halted, and effective measures have made it possible to control any new risks. The effects of this attack on production and bunch quality are wearing off; tighter control of operations: reduction in staff numbers but increased yields, improvements to road network (collection paths) and the various work sites, more consistent application of fertilizer recommendations, better upkeep using chemical treatments, etc. Phase II is continuing to run smoothly, and by the end of July 1989, 3,046 ha had been planted, involving almost 1,400 farmers; the first 1986 plantings are just entering production. Phase III, for which IBRD has given its approval, will take over from Phase II in January 1991; it will involve setting up 5,000 ha of outgrower plantations over 5 years. The training programme, both on site and abroad, is smoothly.
