Résumé : The helicopter treatments undertaken in April-May 1987 completely stifled the Coelaenomenodera minuta attack which, at the end of 1986, caused considerable defoliation on much of the plantation. The trees have recovered and now have a very fine appearance. The regular and careful phytosanitary monitoring shows that the situation is now well under control. A serious effort has been made in circle and harvesting path upkeep. Operations to reduce the number of staff and better supervise vehicle use are under way. As planned, Head Office should shortly be transferred to Kwae. In 1987, it was finally possible to apply the recommended fertilizer rates. The combined effect of water deficits from preceding years, the absence of fertilizer from 1982 to 1986 and, especially, the C. minuta attack at the end of 1986 is responsible for the considerable drop in production recorded in 1987 19,000 tonnes of bunches, compared to 27,000 in 1986. Estimates for 1988 and 1989 are 30,000 and 36,000 tonnes respectively. Six ha of clones were planted in 1988 and a new batch of ramets has arrived for planting in 1989. Phase II is proceeding under excellent conditions: 700 ha, distributed among 365 planters, were created this year. This brings the surface area planted for this project, which involves 1,052 smallholders, to a total of 2,179 ha since 1986. In addition, 277 ha were created in 1987 and 1988 to complete Phase I smallholder plots. The Phase III preliminary study began in February 1988 with a joint mission by a soil scientist, an agronomist and a socio-economist. Personnel training, bath overseas and on site with visits by experts, has been reactivated.
